every year january-may is like a blur of stress and burnout and then i emerge into summer with only the capacity to lie on the couch and bingewatch. i started making this post in july and never finished it but now that i am FEASTING on thai bl i am back.
quarter 1:
- my beautiful man s2: my favorite problematic romance <3 it is kind of excruciating to watch hira to be this oblivious, but i loved kiyoi's development and i thought yagi yusei did a fantastic job with the confrontation scene in ep3. (not the person who wrote a review on mdl titled Cute... but toxic? YEAH THAT IS THE POINT.)
- the eighth sense: very nearly the bl of my dreams. pros: great acting, a very easy and natural chemistry, excellent tension and casual intimacy. cons: compared to so many bls, i appreciate that the producers didn't feel the need to spell everything out, to give the viewers enough credit to get from point a to point b without a flashback reminding you of something that happened five minutes ago, but some of the editing was so pointlessly choppy. chill, film school 101.
- poker face: i don't think the entire season of poker face held up, but the rian johnson directed episodes are all perfect and all the guest stars were pretty delightful.
- music: newjeans - omg, pixy - karma, but really i think i was just listening to nine.i's eps on repeat.
quarter 2:
- moonlight chicken: (putting this here because i didn't watch it as it aired) such a warm and tenderly queer show. i want to lie down and just stare up at my ceiling every time i think about heart/liming. LIKE the young love of it all, the beauty of feeling seen for the first time, the spark of attraction and the experimental touches. also i never made it through a tale of a thousand stars but maybe this made me an earthmix convert.
- our dining table: speaking of warm and tender shows. this was airing during a super stressful time at work for me and i always looked forward to coming home and watching it. just a perfect slice of life that tugged at the heartstrings.
- survivor 44: i might've mentioned at some point that my husband and i watched like 10+ seasons of survivor last year but i think 44 might be the first one we watched weekly. i think there's still a lot they're doing wrong compared to some of the really great earlier seasons but this cast was so good. matt and frannie's romance! frannie's individual challenge wins! CAROLYN and yam yam and carson! carolyn robbed tbh.
- music: fromis_9 - #menow, three man down - rebound, (dkz) nine to six - don't call me, b.i ft. big naughty - dare to love, lauren corrigan - uncertainty, nont tanont - first love
quarter 3/ongoing:
- never let me go: i stayed stalled 1.5 episodes into nlmg when i tried watching it in the spring but em convinced me to watch it and now i would die for both palmnueng and pondphuwin. i think as a show there's a lot that i could complain about but as a romance? stabbed right through the heart. palm's devotion and nueng's loneliness and their attempts to free each other of their perceived burden and episode 9 parts 3 and 4. god pond was born to hang out shirtless at the beach.
- hijack: i love planes and i love idris elba what more can i say.
- only friends: honestly the culmination of p'jojo's works. it's got the messy relationships and manipulation of friend zone and the player, the sex positivity of the warp effect, and the open queerness of gay ok bangkok. worth waking up at 8 am on a saturday for even if only because of mark pakin's face but i am enjoying the hell out of all of it.
- dangerous romance: i knew chimon and perth can both act but after ben/chopper giving us nothing it was hard to predict how they would do with dangerous romance but i love them... kanghan's desperate need to make sailom feel something about him and sailom's complete lack of fear @ kanghan. i don't really mind that we didn't get more enemies to lovers because, based on the trailer, shit is still going to hit the fan.
- music: nine.i - turn it off, newjeans - supershy, pixxie - dejayou, middle kids - highland, shirt ft. h3hyeon - screw it
honorable mentions to laws of attraction (GIVE JAMFILM A BUDGET AND GOOD WRITING!!!), my personal weatherman (which i haven't even watched yet but i know it will be Good when i do), and our dating sim (a basic kbl elevated by good chemistry).
