i wrote most of this a month ago and then posted it, privated it, and added more thoughts sorry.
it's now been 2 months since the new members joined and i have only continued to become WORSE as a human being, by which i mean i wake up every morning and read my kfan shipping list like it's the morning newspaper. so here are some NEW THOUGHTS. old thoughts here.
new members
- sehyeon: i felt a lil bad for sehyeon at first because he seemed to have the hardest time adjusting after debut, but he seems to be coming out of his shell :') i think he had the hardest position to fit into. he doesn't have the built in dynamic of being the maknae, he's got a chingu in kyoungyoon but yoon is already closest to jc/jh obviously and falls into that caretaker mode with mingyu and giseok. it seems like he's getting closer to kyoungyoon these days so i hope we get to see more 00z dynamic soon. sehyeon's personality is still a lil bit of a mystery to me, but he seems really soft-hearted from the way he communicates with fans. i also love that he's always cheering the other members on, even if it's something completely mundane he's off to the side clapping or giving a thumbs up. his expressions and reactions can be so funny and weird but the joy of that is that he doesn't even seem to realize he's being funny.
also i keep thinking about this tweet that called sehyeon "my angelic animate fainting spell" and like damn if that isn't it. his immediate suffering when they played that wrestling game lmaooooo.
- mingyu: i am sorry to say i don't pay much attention to mingyu T__T not because i dislike him or anything, but because in any ranking someone has to come last and for me that's mingyu, because my heart is already set on a 01 liner for jaechan to play with. that being said, i love that mingyu came out of the gate ready to be an idol. he's a really satisfying addition to dkz's vocals and he did a great job on stage with cupid. he doesn't seem afraid of embarrassing himself or being shameless. yes i will not betray the original 01z but jaechan and mingyu are sooo cute together. i love mutual dedication to bothering each other as a basis for a relationship. and kyoungyoon seems to have rly taken to mingyu!! cute!!!!
- giseok: seokgi-ya~ maybe the truth of it is that i have spent so much time trying to figure out who sehyeon is i haven't paid attention to giseok either dfgklsjf. i do think it's funny that they style him like a total Babby but he's certifiably LARGE and his face is actually quite sharp. he fits the sort of classic maknae mold of the go-to aegyo doer and hyung pleaser. i think the two cutest giseok things to me are when he said he wanted to go with the hyungs to an amusement park and everyone was like ehhh :-/ and then kyoungyoon had to make it up to him by saying they could go together and the dkz mafia dance episode where giseok is blindly swayed by jonghyeong (and then his screech when he realizes jonghyeong is still playing him.) they said he talks a LOT but i feel like we haven't seen that extroversion as much bc he's still warming up. i believe there is a bratty maknae in there yet to be seen.
overall dynamic
i think i talked about this on twitter or maybe in my previous post? but knowing that dkz in this iteration has been together since at least the end of 2021 was such reassurance for me. 1. that it seemed like dongyo had an actual plan (and not even that i suspected they DIDN'T but when you have one member suddenly blow up and then you announce big changes it feels like a sudden decision) and 2. that they've had time to get to know each other, rather than having to figure out their group dynamic in front of the cameras. i really hope we get to see some more unscripted content from them because their variety appearances have been v charming but also i want to see more relationship footage. 동고동락 season 2 pls.

i'm sorry if all of this korean is annoying but i know as someone who likes to spy on kfan shipping twitter it's often been difficult to piece together common ship names especially the further they get from actual names (LOOKING AT U, GISEOK/JONGHYEONG). so on the off chance that anyone actually reads this and is interested, i'm sharing the goods.
- current dkz shipping trends (new edition): this could be biased based on my limited sample size (36 accounts on my twitter rps list) but it feels like 멋도 (giseok/jonghyeong) is by far the biggest of new dkz ships. (멋도 comes from giseok saying he wants to be a 멋쟁이(cool guy) and jonghyeong's stylish tomato nickname (토마토→ 도마도) yes it took me a while to put these pieces together). and like i get it because jonghyeong adores giseok and it's so exciting to see jonghyeong with a dongsaeng after being the maknae for three years. other popular new ships include: 깽뀨(kyoungyoon/mingyu), giseok/jaechan (석찬 more than 챤류), 챤전 (jaechan/mingyu), and AFTER A MONTH OF WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO START SHIPPING SEHYEON 갱현 or 찬빗 (yoon/sehyeon, jaechan/sehyeon (the 빗 comes from rabbit). i am partial to 깃갱 (giseok/yoon) solely because i love the ship name. kitty gang... eta: also i can't remember the name off the top of my head but sehyeon/munik weirdly popular? given that they haven't interacted publicly.
- current dkz shipping trends (old edition): the hottest ship is 갱찬 (yoon/jaechan) or 쟃갱 (jaechan/yoon). again this could be from my limited sample size but i feel like 쟃왼 (jaechan left) is surprisingly popular? or more popular than i expected given that his other biggest ship is like....well-established in their positions sgjkljd. i've seen more 찬쫑 (jaechan/jonghyeong) recently (YES!! but also it's funny bc everyone characterizes them as inevitably fighting and having a bad breakup) but i don't see as much 깽도 (yoon/jonghyeong) or the reverse. there are still a lot of gongilz fans who are waiting for munik to come back T__T (me, i'm the fans) and a lot of people anticipating seeing the dynamic between the three of them with the addition of mingyu. it seems like the accepted name for gongilz is now 찬익. also recently there's been a lot of mourning that we all missed out on 원익 (wondae/munik).

comprehensive talent ranking
jk i am not equipped to evaluate anyone's competency but i've been thinking a lot about their dance skills recently after kind of realizing that jaechan is a better dancer than i expected. not to stereotype but when you have a visual who is a rapper not out of any real rap talent (sorry jaechan) you don't really expect much of them but he's pretty good in all of his covers and non-kpop choreo!! one thing i've noticed (spoken in the tone of someone who has no idea what she's talking about) is that he's particularly good at isolations and using his shoulders. he comes off as a little worse to me compared to yoon and jonghyeong during cupid stages bc he is pretty relaxed which can read as lazy-ish at times. or maybe that's just me...
munik is their best dancer but it's not by a massive margin. i feel like his strength is in his versatility and having clean moves overall, like if i was going to watch any member to learn their choreography i would choose munik. jonghyeong is so flexible and fully commits to every move, every stage. one part i always love to watch is jonghyeong during jaechan's 난 또 우쭈쭈 나도 해줘 지금. he always does the most. kyoungyoon is the one who struggled the most with dance initially but idk if it's his athletic background or what but i wouldn't have been able to guess that. maybe that's because he always comes across as so confident and genuinely enthused on stage. with cupid, you can definitely tell that he has his favorite moves and his energy is infectious when he performs them.
as far as the newbies go, i wanted to say mingyu > giseok > sehyeon but giseok's 아슬아슬하게 너를 원해 >>>>>. maybe mingyu just appeared more confident on stage from the start. none of them are bad by any means, but sehyeon has obviously struggled with confidence on stage the most. that being said i love his part of the cupid chorus the most. eta: ok post lupin solo cams i am revising this to say giseok > mingyu > sehyeon. sehyeon is just........please no one is holding you at gunpoint it's ok.
i am even less qualified to talk about vocals but i love kyoungyoon hitting his note live (almost) every time. i liked wondae's vocal tone quite a bit so i do miss it in the updated songs :'( mingyu's tone is unique so it's not a bad addition to dkz but i spent all of cupid trying to figure out who his voice reminds me of.
