THOUGHTS (including potential spoilers for any bolded series):
- your name engraved herein was probably one of my favorite movies i watched this year, with the exception of the last 20 minutes. months and months later i keep coming back to both versions of the ost to reminisce.
- the devil judge is the first full-length korean drama i have finished since age of youth in 2016. yes i was enticed by the homoeroticism, no i was not disappointed. the writing was goofy a lot of the time, but surprisingly intriguing, if not largely in part due to ji sung's charisma.
- speaking of the devil judge, this year i consumed four pieces of crime/thriller media including tdj, modu, remember you, and beyond evil. funnily enough three of these involve bad things happening to characters in basements (maybe all four if you count [redacted spoiler]. the best of these though was hands down beyond evil. this show took me entirely by surprise with the brain rot it inspired. incredible writing, incredible acting from everyone but especially shin hakyun, an incredible romance (a romance!! i stand by it!!) it was clearly a labor of love, and the chemistry between actors and production showed.
- we best love supremacy. as it turns out, a cast that plays their roles with sincerity can overcome most bad writing decisions.
- the year's biggest bl surprise....light on me. there is no way i would've guessed that a show based on a dating sim would give us the most touching portrayal of the queer experience i've seen in a korean bl, especially if you get past the first episode. shin daon character of the year!! you just have to look beyond the slow walking/talking.
- look gary was totally, 100% robbed on making the cut s2 but i did buy one of andrea s.'s zara-esque skirts anyway
- so, i promised you the moon. i have a hard time untangling how i actually felt about the drama with how irritating the fandom is and was. any sweeping generalizations about what lgbt people do (no gay ppl cheat on their partners i guess??) or what lgbt people enjoy watching (not itsay2 apparently) is a hot button for me on bl twitter and i don't like being the kind of person who lets other people's opinions bug me this much but alas. in the end it was fine and oabnithi is so sexy i can understand why anyone would cheat on their partner with him.
- why did i start watching my hero academia in the year 2021...idk i'm not mad about it.
- american designated survivor is one of the most bonkers shows i've watched (THERE'S A SPECIFICALLY RACIST VIRUS?!) and i have no idea what drew me to the korean version but it was kind of great? it had its own bonkers moments but i found myself really rooting for park mujin and his lil blue house team.
- yes i only read(/listened to) four books...they wish they were us was super annoying but i rarely don't finish audiobooks for some reason so i kept trudging through it. love the cover, hate the characters, will probably watch the TV adaptation.
- i will be starting the player and 55:15 never too late at some point soon on the thai drama end of things and i really want to watch bad and crazy but i have [redacted] to finish before i allow myself to start anything.
